THROWBACK 1973 || The Southside Movement "I've Been Watchin' You"

"I've Been Watchin' You" is perhaps best known for the plethora of hip hop songs the opening riff has been sampled for: Brotha Lynch Hung's "24 Deep", Diamond D's "It's Nothin'", Beastie Boys' "So What'cha Want"... the list goes on.

Starting off in Chicago as the backing band for (even more obscure) soul duo Simtec & Wylie, the Southside Movement recorded their self-titled debut in 1973 for Wand Records. The next year's follow up, Movin', produced another oft-sampled track in "Save the World". After releasing a third album in 1975, the band dissipated.

The Child of Lov: "Give Me"

Not quite cloud rap, or really even hip hop in any meaningful sense at all, "Give Me" is actually just amazing, whacked out sleaze funk of the most opaque order. I'd never heard of The Child of Lov before, but a little quick Googling gives the unlikely info that this is a 25 year old honky from the Netherlands with an affinity for pineapples. The video is equally as exhilarating, an inner city club party relocated way out into the sticks, which is actually a pretty fucking amazing idea if you ask me.

A full length album is in the works, but from what I can tell right now "Give Me" the single is available only as a digital download via iTunes.

Does it speak ill of me that I recognize without prompting that most - if not all - of these NSFW images were culled from a series of softcore videos Penthouse magazine put out back in the 1990s? I feel like I've said too much already.

The O'My's: "HoneyDip"

Ain't no pimpin' like some 70's pimpin'. The O'My's heard us perpetratin' 'bout how they don't make 'em like that anymore and they were like "oh yeah, mahfackas? Peep THIS!"

It would actually almost be worth losing your girl just to have that frame-worthy note from Milky.

Hawthorne Headhunters: "My Sweetheart the Drunk"

Nope, not a Jeff Buckley cover - he had a posthumous album called Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk but there was never a song with a similar title - but hopefully the breakthrough single for LA-via-St. Louis duo Hawthorne Headhunters. Myriad of Now - out now on Plug Research - is a unification of 20th century African-American music: soul, funk, hip hop, jazz... boys got it all.

THEESatisfaction: "QueenS"

THEESatisfaction is not - as the name might suggest - a Billy Childish project, nor would it be a lot cooler if it was. They are a Seattle duo creating swirling, vertigo-inducing funk/soul/rap combinations of pure psychedelic intent. "QueenS" is not about the NYC borough but instead a reference to their own self-empowerment motto, "Queens Supreme". Whatever. Just get lost in the discombulation of this head bobbing motherfucker while snacking on those neo-vintage visuals.
